Mechanistic Insights into the Palladium-Catalyzed Perfluoroalkylative Carbonylation of Unactivated Alkenes to β-Perfluoroalkyl Esters: A DFT Study.

Transition metal-catalyzed multicomponent carbonylation is an efficient synthetic strategy to access multifunctional esters in high yields with broad functional group tolerance and good chemoselectivity. Considering the development of highly efficient synthetic methods for esters, it remains significant to grasp the mechanism of constructing multifunctional esters. Herein, density functional theoretical calculations were carried out to acquire mechanistic insight into the synthesis of β-perfluoroalkyl esters from a specific palladium-catalyzed perfluoroalkylative carbonylation of unactivated alkenes using carbon monoxide. A detailed mechanistic understanding of this reaction route includes (1) multistep radical reaction process, (2) C-C coupling and CO insertion, (3) ligand exchange, and (4) Pd-based intermediate oxidation and reductive elimination. The multistep radical process was fundamentally rationalized, including Rf· formation and radicals A and E from unactivated alkene and CO oxidation, respectively. The potential energy calculation indicated that the CO insertion into the perfluorinated alkyl radicals preceded Pd-catalyzed oxidation in the competitively multistep free radical reaction process. In addition, the I-/PhO- exchange step was predicted to be spontaneous to products. The IGMH analysis further attested to the reductive elimination process involved in the rate-determining step. Thus, a simple and valid density functional theory (DFT) approach was developed to reveal the multistep radical mechanism for the Pd-catalyzed perfluoroalkylative carbonylation of unactivated alkenes to access functional β-perfluoroalkyl esters.

Density Functional Theory Study on the Mechanism of Nickel-Catalyzed 3,3-Dialkynylation of 2-Aryl Acrylamides Via Double Vinylic C-H Bond Activation.

The mechanisms of Ni-catalyzed 3,3-dialkynylation of 2-aryl acrylamide have been investigated by using density functional theory calculations. The result shows that this reaction includes double alkynylation, which involves sequential key steps of vinylic C-H bond activation, successive oxidative addition, and reductive elimination, with the second C-H bond activation being the rate-determining step. C-H and N-H bond activation occurs via the concerted metalation-deprotonation mechanism. The calculations show that no transition state exists in the first reductive elimination process, and a negative free energy barrier in the second reductive elimination process though a transition state is identified, indicating that the nickel-catalyzed vinylic C(sp2)-C(sp) bond formation does not require activation energy. Z-E isomerization is the prerequisite for the second alkynylation. In addition, our spin-flip TDDFT (SF-TDDFT) computational result discloses that the actual process of Z-E isomerization occurs on the potential energy surface of the first excited singlet state S1.

Assessing the activity and stereoselectivity of heterobimetallic Zr/Co complexes catalyzed terminal alkyne dimerization: A DFT study

Early/late heterobimetallic complexes are widely recognized as one of the most effective catalysts for activating coupling reactions. Herein, DFT calculations were used to investigate the specific mechanisms of terminal alkyne dimerization facilitated by two types of Zr/Co complexes: the bis (phosphinoamide) complex B and the mono (phosphinoamide) complex C. In addition, their reaction activities were compared with that of three ligand‐bridged Zr/Co complex A. The results show that the activated mechanisms of the three reactions are similar, all of them contain inner‐ and outer‐sphere mechanisms, and the inner one is the optimal process. Compared to A, the terminal alkyne dimerizations activated by B and C have the lower energy barriers and better selectivity for the E‐isomer; thus, the mono‐ and bis‐(phosphinoamide) Zr/Co complexes are expected to show better activity and selectivity than tris (phosphinoamide) complexes. The stereoselectivity of E‐, Z‐, and gem‐isomers is controlled by the reductive elimination process. The IRI analysis reveals that the selectivity for E‐ and Z‐isomers is influenced due to the notable repulsion and vdW interaction between the second alkyne and the MeNPMe2 ligand. Our work provides a theoretical basis for experimental applications and offers inspiration for the design of high selectivity heterobimetallic complexes.

Reactivities of Photoredox Generated Nickel‐Nucleophilic Reactive Organometallic Species

AbstractDual photoredox catalysis has revolutionized the field of cross‐coupling reactions, enabling the discovery of numerous highly efficient reactions. This breakthrough is attributed to the exceptional combination of nickel catalysis with photoredox catalysis. Nickel exhibits both oxidative addition and reductive elimination processes, and a wide range of oxidation states (ranging from I to IV) accessible within a single catalytic cycle. Furthermore, nickel complexes are capable of catalyzing various processes through radical mechanisms. The latest feature has proven to be incredibly potent in facilitating the formation of new C−C and C−X bonds (X=H, O, S, N). The powerful combination of photoredox and nickel catalysis reveals an expansive domain of unexplored possibilities. It offers unparalleled opportunities for improving reactions and exploring innovative pathways. Under photoredox conditions, it is possible to form nucleophilic reactive organometallic intermediates, useful in reaction with electrophiles. We have devoted a research program towards the rediscovery and use of organometallic reagents, introduced by Corey, Hegedus, and Semmelack many years ago. The results unveiled the extraordinary capabilities of photoredox catalysis, enabling the creation and efficient utilization of potent nucleophilic organometallic reagents under mild conditions, free from the need for strong bases or stoichiometric metal reductants.

Mechanism and Stereoselectivity Control of Terminal Alkyne Dimerization Activated by a Zr/Co Heterobimetallic Complex: A DFT Study.

Heterobimetallic complexes have recently garnered considerable attention in organic synthesis owing to their high activity and selectivity, which surpass those of monometallic complexes. In this study, the detailed mechanisms of terminal alkyne dimerization activated by the heterobimetallic Zr/Co complex, as well as the different stereoselectivities of Me3SiC≡CH and PhC≡CH dimerization, were investigated and elucidated by using density functional theory calculations. After excluding the three-molecule reaction and outer-sphere mechanisms, the inner-sphere mechanism was determined as the most optimal process. The inner-sphere mechanism involves four processes: THF dissociation and coordination of the first alkyne; ligand migration and C-H activation; N2 dissociation and insertion of the second alkyne; and reductive elimination. The stereoselectivity between the E-/Z- and gem-isomers is determined by the C-C coupling mode of the two alkynes and that of the E- and Z-isomers is determined by the sequence of the C-C coupling and hydrogen migration in the reductive elimination process. Me3SiC≡CH dimerization yields only an E-isomer owing to the large differences in the distortion and interaction energies, whereas PhC≡CH dimerization produces an E-, Z-, and gem-isomers owing to the reduced interaction energy differences.

Nitrogenase beyond the Resting State: A Structural Perspective.

Nitrogenases have the remarkable ability to catalyze the reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia under physiological conditions. How does this happen? The current view of the nitrogenase mechanism focuses on the role of hydrides, the binding of dinitrogen in a reductive elimination process coupled to loss of dihydrogen, and the binding of substrates to a binuclear site on the active site cofactor. This review focuses on recent experimental characterizations of turnover relevant forms of the enzyme determined by cryo-electron microscopy and other approaches, and comparison of these forms to the resting state enzyme and the broader family of iron sulfur clusters. Emerging themes include the following: (i) The obligatory coupling of protein and electron transfers does not occur in synthetic and small-molecule iron-sulfur clusters. The coupling of these processes in nitrogenase suggests that they may involve unique features of the cofactor, such as hydride formation on the trigonal prismatic arrangement of irons, protonation of belt sulfurs, and/or protonation of the interstitial carbon. (ii) Both the active site cofactor and protein are dynamic under turnover conditions; the changes are such that more highly reduced forms may differ in key ways from the resting-state structure. Homocitrate appears to play a key role in coupling cofactor and protein dynamics. (iii) Structural asymmetries are observed in nitrogenase under turnover-relevant conditions by cryo-electron microscopy, although the mechanistic relevance of these states (such as half-of-sites reactivity) remains to be established.

Theoretical Investigations on the Rh(III)-Catalyzed Oxidative C-H Activation/Annulation of Salicylaldehydes with Masked Enynes: Mechanism Insights and Regioselectivity Origins.

The mechanism underlying the rhodium(III)-catalyzed reaction of the C-H alkenylation/annulation reaction of salicylaldehydes with enynes has been thoroughly investigated using DFT calculations. Based on mechanistic studies, our focus primarily lies on the regioselectivity of asymmetric alkynes inserting into the Rh-C bond and the involvement of the auxiliary group OAc- in these reactions. Our theoretical study uncovers that, with acetate assistance, a stepwise SN2' cyclization, 1,3-Rh migration, β-H elimination, and reductive elimination process occur. Furthermore, we also explore the role of substitution at Cα (CH3 vs H) in the reaction. As demonstrated in this work, these findings are applicable to other related reactions.

Revised Mechanism of C(sp3)-C(sp3) Reductive Elimination from Ni(II) with the Assistance of a Z-Type Metalloligand.

Reductive elimination is a key step in Ni-catalyzed cross-couplings. Compared with processes that proceed from Ni(III) or Ni(IV) intermediates, C(sp3)-C(sp3) reductive eliminations from Ni(II) centers are challenging due to the weak oxidizing ability of Ni(II) species. In this report, we present computational evidence that supports a mechanism in which Zn coordination to the nickel center as a Z-type ligand accelerates reductive elimination. This Zn-assisted pathway is found to be lower in energy compared with direct reductive elimination from a σ-coordinated Ni(II) intermediate, providing new insights into the mechanism of Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling with organozinc nucleophiles. Mayer bond order, Hirshfield charge, Laplacian of the electron density, orbital, and interaction region indicator analyses were conducted to elucidate details of the reductive elimination process and characterize the key intermediates. Theoretical calculations indicate a significant Z-type Ni-Zn interaction that reduces the electron density around the Ni center and accelerates reductive elimination. This mechanistic study of reductive elimination in Ni(0)-catalyzed conjunctive cross-couplings of aryl iodides, organozinc reagents, and alkenes is an important case study of the involvement of Zn-assisted reductive elimination in Ni catalysis. We anticipate that the novel Zn-assisted reductive elimination mode may extend to other cross-coupling processes and explain the unique effectiveness of organozinc nucleophiles in many instances.

Intimate relationship between C-I reductive elimination, aryl scrambling and isomerization processes in Au(III) complexes.

19F NMR monitoring shows that heating trans-[AuIIIRf2I2]- solutions (Rf = C6F3Cl2-3,5) leads to formation of cis-[AuRf2I2]-, [AuRf3I]- and [AuRfI3]-via kinetic competition between isomerization and Rf/I scrambling. The system evolution is driven by the easy Rf-I reductive elimination from [AuRfI3]- (forming also [AuI2]-), which is faster than any of the Rf-Rf couplings from the coexisting species, hindering the commonly desired and thermodynamically preferred C-C coupling. A kinetic model where I- dissociation triggers both isomerization and transmetalation steps is proposed, which fits well the experimental data. DFT calculations support that the lower bond strength of AuIII-I compared to other halides produces a pathway switch that makes C-I coupling kinetically preferred. Consequently, it is better avoided in reactions looking for C-C coupling.

Photochemically generated reactive sites at ruthenium/gallium complexes: catalysis vs. cluster growth.

Irradiation of [Ru(GaCp*)3(SiEt3)H3] (1) at 350 nm induces reductive elimination of dihydrogen and triethylsilane and generates unsaturated Ru/Ga species. This photochemically induced cascading reductive elimination processes generate the reactive intermediate [Ru(GaCp*)3], which can be trapped by diphosphine coordination to yield the stable complex [(dppe)Ru(GaCp*)3] (4). The photochemically generated RuGa3 species is catalytically active in the hydrogenation of alkynes, which is further investigated by 1H NMR and mass spectrometry. Formation of intermetallic Ru/Ga clusters is observed as a competing and for the catalytic activity of the species limiting side reaction.

Facile Assembly of Modular-Type Phosphines for Tackling Modern Arylation Processes.

ConspectusThis Account presents an overview of a promising collection of phosphine ligands simply made from the modular Fischer indolization process and their applications in modern arylation processes. Using one easily accessible 2-arylindole scaffold, three major phosphino-moiety-positioned ligand series can be readily generated. We have attempted to explore challenging electrophilic and nucleophilic partners for the coupling reaction using the modular ligand tool. For the electrophilic partner study, CM-phos-type ligands, where the phosphino group is located at the 2-arene position of 2-arylindole, allow the successful cross-coupling of aryl mesylates. The CM-phos ligand forms a palladacycle before entering the cross-coupling catalytic cycle. For the nucleophilic partner investigation, the indole C3-positioned phosphines show the first accomplishment of Pd-catalyzed organotitanium nucleophile arylation. Indeed, the aryl-titanium nucleophile undergoes cross-coupling more efficiently than does the organoboron coupling partner in particular cases. Moreover, in the indole C3-positioned phosphine series, the -PPh2-containing ligands perform better in the highly sterically hindered cross-coupling of aryl chlorides than do ligands containing the -PCy2 moiety. The catalyst loading can even be reduced to 0.2 mol % Pd for tetra-ortho-substituted biaryl synthesis. This finding offers a new perspective on the next-generation design of phosphine ligands in which the sterically bulky and electron-rich -PR2 group (R = alkyl) may not be necessary for the cross-coupling of aryl chlorides. In general, we hypothesize that a good balance of steric and electronic properties for entertaining the oxidative addition and reductive elimination steps is crucial to the success of the reaction. For the steric factor, the highly sterically congested -PR2 group normally favors the reductive elimination, yet we conjecture that this sterically bulky group would serve as an obstacle for the incoming aryl halides. For the electronic factor, the electron rich -PR2 group is believed to support the oxidative cleavage of the C(Ar)-Cl bond by donating more electron density to the corresponding σ* orbital. Nevertheless, the high electron richness of the -PR2 group may disfavor the reductive elimination electronically. Overall, an appropriate balance of both electron density and steric bulkiness is suggested to allow the sterically hindered cross-coupling to proceed smoothly. We have found that the -PPh2-containing ligand is a good starting point for this investigation. The formation of aromatic carbon-carbon (C-C) and carbon-heteroatom (C-X) bonds from aryl chlorides was successfully realized using our proprietary phosphines.In addition to the indole-core-bearing ligand skeleton, we also explored the relevant imidazolyl and carbazolyl phosphines for their unique applications. Interestingly, the carbazolyl ligand, having more flexible C-N axial chirality, displays particular interchangeable Pd-N and Pd-arene coordination, which facilitates both oxidative addition and reductive elimination processes. Moreover, this C-N axially chiral ligand allows the successful asymmetric Suzuki-Miyaura coupling for attaining the most sterically hindered tetra-ortho-substituted biaryls with excellent enantioselectivity. The rationale behind these scientifically interesting findings is presented in detail.

Electronic and Steric Control of Rates and Selectivities in Rhodium-Catalyzed [2+2+2] Cycloadditions for Constructing Fused Tricyclic Hydronaphthofurans: A Density Functional Theory Study.

Fused tricyclic hydronaphthofurans with multiple chiral centers are very important skeletons for constructing natural products; however, their synthesis is challenging, and a detailed understanding of the final formation mechanism remains elusive. In this work, density functional theory computations were employed to characterize rhodium-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition of enyne with terminal alkynes. The putative mechanism involves an initial ligand exchange, followed by oxidative cyclization, olefin insertion, and reductive elimination processes. Oxidative cyclization is shown to be the rate- and selectivity-determining step of the full chemical transformation, where the R substituent on terminal alkynes has a significant influence on the reaction selectivities. When R is an electron-donating group (OMe and Me), the ortho-substituted tricyclic hydronaphthofurans (P1) are predicted to be dominant; on the contrary, meta-substituted compounds P2 emerge as the main products when R is an electron-withdrawing group (NO2, CF3, and CN). Computational predictions for selectivity are in good agreement with experimental product ratios. Free energy barriers of the rate-determining step for P1 and P2 are ∼22.3-23.6 kcal mol-1, which align well with their experimental yields of ∼79-92% at 313 K after 0.5 h. The results also accurately reproduce experimentally observed regio-, chemo-, and enantioselectivities, with steric hindrance as well as electronic properties of the substrate and ligand markedly influencing the reaction rates and selectivities. The influence of computational methods is also explored and discussed in detail.

IrIII/NiII-Metallaphotoredox-Catalyzed Enantioselective Decarboxylative Arylation of α-Amino Acids: Theoretical Insight of Enantio-Determining Outer-Sphere Reductive Elimination.

The IrIII/NiII-metallaphotoredox-catalyzed enantioselective decarboxylative arylation of α-amino acids has been systematically investigated using density functional theory calculations. The combination of oxidative quenching (IrIII-*IrIII-IrIV-IrIII) or reductive quenching (IrIII-*IrIII-IrII-IrIII) cycle with the nickel catalytic cycle (NiII-NiI-NiIII-NiII) is possible. The favorable reaction mechanism consists of three major processes: single-electron transfer, oxidative addition, and stepwise outer-sphere reductive elimination. The rate-determining step is the oxidative addition. Unexpectedly, the enantio-determining C-C bond formation occurs via an ion-pair intermediate involved in the stepwise outer-sphere reductive elimination process, which is unusual in the IrIII/NiII-metallaphotoredox catalysis. Furthermore, computational results reveal that the high enantioselectivity of this reaction is mainly dependent on the steric effect of substituents on substrates. This theoretical study provides useful knowledge for deep insights into the activity and selectivity of visible-light-mediated enantioselective metallaphotoredox dual catalysis at the molecular and atomic levels and benefits the development of asymmetric synthesis.

Neutral Five‐Coordinate Arylated Copper(III) Complex: Key Intermediate in Copper‐Mediated Arene Trifluoromethylation

Comprehensive SummaryFive‐coordinate neutral Cu(III) complexes have long been considered as the key intermediates in copper‐mediated/catalyzed arene trifluoromethylative reactions, but the identity of these complexes remains elusive. Herein, we reported, for the first time, the preparation and characterization of these putative complexes [(bpy)Cu(CF3)2(C6F4R)] and investigation of their C(sp2)‐CF3 bond‐forming reductive elimination. Our mechanistic studies including kinetic studies, the effect of temperature and solvents, the effect of the para‐substitution of the ligand as well as DFT calculations suggest that C(sp2)‐CF3 reductive elimination process proceeds via synchronous bond‐breaking/bond‐forming process.

Copper(I) activation of C-X bonds: bimolecular vs. unimolecular reaction mechanism.

Experimental kinetic studies and DFT calculations show that the oxidative addition of aryl halides (Ar-X) to complexes [Cu(NHC)R] follow different paths depending on the nature of X. For X = Br a concerted addition leads to cis-[Cu(NHC)XRAr] from which the usual C-C coupled product Ar-R eliminates. However, for X = I trans-[Cu(NHC)IRAr] is formed instead, leading to the elimination of R-I in a metathesis reaction. This behaviour is accounted for by a change in the reaction mechanism for Ar-I, which involves two molecules of copper(I) complex, the second one stabilising the incipient iodide formed in the C-I breaking (oxidative addition) and C-I forming (reductive elimination) processes.

Rh(III)-Catalyzed Annulation of 2-Biphenylboronic Acid with Diverse Activated Alkenes.

Rhodium(III)-catalyzed annulation of 2-biphenylboronic acids with three classes of activated alkenes has been realized, leading to the synthesis of fused or bridged cyclic skeletons via transmetalation-initiated C-H activation. In the annulative coupling of 2-biphenylboronic acid with a CF3-substituted enone, the bulky cyclopentadienyl ligand (CptBu) in the catalyst proved effective to promote the reductive elimination process prior to protonolysis, affording the [4 + 2] annulated products instead of the simple 1,4-addition product. Seven-membered rings were obtained when disubstituted cyclopropenones were employed. Bridged cycles were isolated from the coupling of 2-biphenylboronic acid with benzoquinones as a result of 2-fold Michael additions. The substrate scopes were found to be broad with up to 99% yield under air-tolerant conditions.

Ti-Catalyzed and -Mediated Oxidative Amination Reactions.

Titanium is an attractive metal for catalytic reaction development: it is earth-abundant, inexpensive, and generally nontoxic. However-like most early transition metals-catalytic redox reactions with Ti are difficult because of the stability of the high-valent TiIV state. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms behind Ti redox processes is key for making progress toward potential catalytic applications. This Account details recent progress in Ti-catalyzed (and -mediated) oxidative amination reactions that proceed through formally TiII/TiIV catalytic cycles.This class of reactions is built on our initial discovery of Ti-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 1] pyrrole synthesis from alkynes and azobenzene, where detailed mechanistic studies have revealed important factors that allow for catalytic turnover despite the inherent difficulty of Ti redox. Two important conclusions from mechanistic studies are that (1) low-valent Ti intermediates in catalysis can be stabilized through coordination of π-acceptor substrates or products, where they can act as "redox-noninnocent" ligands through metal-to-ligand π back-donation, and (2) reductive elimination processes with Ti proceed through π-type electrocyclic (or pericyclic) reaction mechanisms rather than direct σ-bond coupling.The key reactive species in Ti-catalyzed oxidative amination reactions are Ti imidos (Ti≡NR), which can be generated from either aryl diazenes (RN═NR) or organic azides (RN3). These Ti imidos can then undergo [2 + 2] cycloadditions with alkynes, resulting in intermediates that can be coupled to an array of other unsaturated functional groups, including alkynes, alkenes, nitriles, and nitrosos. This basic reactivity pattern has been extended into a broad range of catalytic and stoichiometric oxidative multicomponent coupling reactions of alkynes and other reactive small molecules, leading to multicomponent syntheses of various heterocycles and aminated building blocks.For example, catalytic oxidative coupling of Ti imidos with two different alkynes leads to pyrroles, while stoichiometric oxidative coupling with alkynes and nitriles leads to pyrazoles. These heterocycle syntheses often yield substitution patterns that are complementary to those of classical condensation routes and provide access to new electron-rich, highly substituted heteroaromatic scaffolds. Furthermore, catalytic oxidative alkyne carboamination reactions can be accomplished via reaction of Ti imidos with alkynes and alkenes, yielding α,β-unsaturated imine or cyclopropylimine building blocks. New catalytic and stoichiometric oxidative amination methods such as alkyne α-diimination, isocyanide imination, and ring-opening oxidative amination of strained alkenes are continuously emerging as a result of better mechanistic understanding of Ti redox catalysis.Ultimately, these Ti-catalyzed and -mediated oxidative amination methods demonstrate the importance of examining often-overlooked elements like the early transition metals through the lens of modern catalysis: rather than a lack of utility, these elements frequently have undiscovered potential for new transformations with orthogonal or complementary selectivity to their late transition metal counterparts.

Copper‐Mediated Phosphorylation of Arylsilanes with H‐Phosphonate Diesters

AbstractHerein we report a facile method for the synthesis of arylphosphonates via copper‐mediated the cross‐coupling reaction in the presence of 1, 10‐Phenanthroline and Ag2O. This method features a broad scope with respect to both the arylsilanes and H‐phosphonate diesters. Mechanistically, the reaction is proposed to involve oxidation by phosphinyl radical and reductive elimination process as the two key steps. With the optimized conditions established, various arylphosphonates were obtained up to 74% yield. This protocol is the first example of copper mediated the Ar−P bond formation of various arylsilanes with H‐phosphonates, and this novel methodology expands the applications of low cost and toxicity copper reagent in Ar−P bond construction.

Theoretical investigation into the mechanism of copper-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling using trans-1,2-diamino cyclohexane ligand

The mechanism of copper-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reaction employing trans-1,2-diamino cyclohexane ligand have been investigated with Density Functional Theory (DFT) method augmented with Conductor-like Polarizable Continuum Model (CPCM) solvation model. The cross-coupling reactions could be accelerated by employing chelating diamine ligands. Thus, we considered trans-1,2-diamino cyclohexane as the ligand for our study. These coupling reactions find its applicability in the synthesis of aryl acetylenes, the precursors for the various benzofuran derivatives which are present in many biologically important compounds. Considering various reaction pathways possible, it was found that diamine ligated copper (I) acetylide was the active state of the catalyst, which on further reaction with aryl halide undergoes a concerted oxidative addition – reductive elimination process giving the cross-coupled product aryl acetylene while regenerating the active catalytic species. Unlike the Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira cross-coupling, there occurs a concerted mechanism owing to the ease of bond formation between Csp2-Csp carbon atoms and instability of a Cu (III) metal center. This shows the mechanism of copper-catalyzed cross-couplings are quite different from that of Pd catalyzed reactions. The latter usually involves individual process involving oxidative addition and reductive elimination. The presences of various functional groups on the substrate molecules have a crucial role in determining the feasibility of the reaction. Highly Regio- and Enantioselective Hydrogenation of Conjugated α-Substituted Dienoic Acids.

Highly regio- and enantioselective hydrogenation of conjugated α-substituted dienoic acids was realized for the first time using Trifer-Rh complex, providing a straightforward method for the synthesis of chiral α-substituted γ,δ-unsaturated acids. DFT calculations revealed N+H-O hydrogen bonding interaction is formed to stabilize the transition state and the coordination of 4,5-double bond to Rh(III) center would facilitate the reductive elimination process. This hydrogenation provided a gram-scale synthesis of the precursor of sacubitril.
